In 1992, Lower Mainland Vegetable Distributors Inc. was incorporated to market and distribute root crop vegetables produced in the Fraser Valley. In 2007 we changed our name to BCfresh to better represent the unparalleled freshness of our produce. We are also 100% owned and operated by BC growers.
Today, BCfresh vegetables are meticulously grown on 32 family farms throughout the Fraser Valley, many of the families going back four and five generations. Together, they have combined sales of over 65,000 tons of root crops per annum. That represents a retail value of BCfresh vegetable crops to our province of more than $100 million every year. Eating "local" helps families and communities to grow. Every dollar earned by a BCfresh vegetable grower generates $6 to $7 in income for other British Columbians.
In the Fraser Valley over 6,000 acres are dedicated to root vegetable production. All BCfresh produce is distributed daily through 3 on-farm warehouse facilities located in Delta and Surrey. Each facility is equipped with modern coolers, sorting and handling equipment to ensure BC consumers receive all the best from these lower mainland farming families.
BCfresh vegetable farmers are leaders in progressive farming techniques and recognized for our development and implementation of environmentally sensitive growing practices and sustainable agriculture technology based on good science. This has resulted in a commitment to environmental stewardship, food safety, and active participation in the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust.
In 1993 local farmers and conservationists with an interest in conserving agricultural and wildlife resources in Delta founded the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust. Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust’s mission is to promote the preservation of farmland and associated wildlife habitat on the Fraser River Delta through sustainable farming and land stewardship.
BCfresh growers have also adopted Integrated Pest Management (IPM) as a pest management tool. IPM uses a combination of techniques to manage crop pests in economically and environmentally sound ways. It works on the premise that the crop can tolerate some pest presence without causing economic loss to the grower. IPM relies heavily on regular observation of the crop, cultural practices that prevent damage, and thresholds that correlate pest presence with actual damage caused. Control measures are taken when pest levels approach the level that will cause economic loss to the grower. IPM practices encourage the selection of controls that are economical, effective, and least disruptive to beneficial organisms, humans, and environment.
BCfresh producers take pride in providing consumers with safe, high quality, nutritious vegetables. One way BCfresh producers are doing this is by adopting compliance to the Canadian Horticulture Councils On-Farm Food Safety Program. In 2007, all of our major operations underwent and passed 3rd party audit of this program by SGS Systems.
