Estevan Tuna Company

Estevan Tuna Company is a family-based fishing business located in the Comox Valley of Vancouver Island. They specialize in BC Wild Albacore tuna, which is caught in the pristine deep waters of the North Pacific Ocean off the costs of BC, Washington and Oregon. BC Wild albacore tuna is harvested and frozen-at sea to ensure premium taste and quality. Since tuna swim in warm water and thus have a warmer body temperature, freezing at sea ensures the freshest tasting product. They employ sustainable fishing methods using surface jig hooks, which minimizes damage to the ocean environment. This selective fishing method ensures that there is no by-catch of non – targeted species, and is approved by Canada’s Seafood Guide, Audobon Society, David Suzuki Foundation and the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program. Bruce Devereux, the company’s founder, maintains that “sustainable fishing methods help protect stocks for future generations,” and is a vital component of a healthy fishing industry.

Estevan Tuna Company catches the younger West Coast albacore, which has more natural oils than the more mature tuna caught by larger canneries. The tuna caught off the West Coast are three to four years old, meaning they have very small accumulations of mercury and other contaminants. Tuna is regularly tested by the Canadian Highly Migratory Species Foundation to ensure that it is safe for consumption. They guarantee superior quality and taste for all their tuna products. British Columbia albacore tuna is a 100% wild food that is high in protein, low in carbohydrates, full of selenium, and very high in Omega-3 fish oils, well known for their nutritional value.

Bruce has been supplying fine restaurants on Vancouver Island for many years, and is now able to sell some products to the public. You can find Estevan Tuna Company’s products at various farmers’ markets around BC, such as Comox Valley Market, Vancouver’s West End Market, Kitsilano Market, and Burnaby Market. In Vancouver, selected products are also available at The Gourmet Warehouse on West Hastings and Clark. Many of their wild tuna products can also be purchased through secure online ordering at www.bctuna.com.
