Natural Pastures Cheese Company makes luscious artisan cheeses, all hand-made under the guidance of their Swiss Master Cheesemaker. They only use milk, pure and fresh from their heritage dairy farms on Vancouver Island.
The Smith family of Beaver Meadow Farms turned to cheesemaking in 2001 and their sustainable, world-class standards have already produced a range of cheeses receiving renowned world and national awards. Natural Pastures’ traditional artisan procedures and aging take time, with attentive, professional care at their federally inspected facility located in the city of Courtenay.
All the farms that produce milk for Natural Pastures’ cheesemaking practice sustainable farming and animal stewardship. These farms are committed to environmental sustainability, and the natural wildlife habitat has been enhanced. The enhanced stream habitats raise thousands of wild Coho Salmon each year.
“When you taste Natural Pastures cheeses, you’ll experience the delicious reasons for our 28 prestigious national and international awards,” says Edgar Smith, President of Natural Pastures Cheese Company. “Our cheeses have a delicious “terroir” from these rare, privileged, coastal valley environments. Mild seaside climatic conditions contribute to rare, ambrosial taste experiences for those savouring Natural Pastures cheeses.”
Cheeses produced include the soft, bloomy rind Comox Brie and Comox Camembert, both prestigious award winners. One of their new fresh cheeses is Mozzarella di Buffala Fairburn, and firm cheeses include Amsterdammer and Boerenkaas. They also produce five superbly flavoured Verdelait cheeses, which is the award-winning blend of cheddar, Dutch gouda and Swiss raclette developed by Natural Pastures.
They are proud members of the Conservation Partners Program, a province-wide initiative of The Land Conservancy, which brings a collaborative approach to uniting ecological conservation with sustainable agriculture values and practices.
