Vancouver Farmers Markets (VFM) began in 1995 to bring farm-fresh local food to city dwellers. Since then, they have helped create healthy food networks that sustain our land, our community and our homes.

VFM runs four farmers markets in Vancouver during the warmer months, at Trout Lake, Nat Bailey Stadium, the West End and in Kitsilano. During the colder months they run a bi-weekly Winter Market, and each December they host an annual Holiday Market.

“When you shop at Vancouver Farmers Markets, you help keep BC farmers farming,” says Tara MacDonald, Executive Director of VFM. “Weekly farmers markets provide a viable venue for farmers, artisans and bakers/cooks  – many of whom wouldn’t survive without this direct marketing opportunity.”

Shoppers have told VFM that thanks to the markets, they are now eating more fresh fruits and vegetables and more organic foods. They also say they feel deep sense of community and connection with their food producers.

“One of the best things about our farmers markets is that for the first time, many city-dwellers are chatting with farmers about their products, growing and preparation methods, and learning how to prepare new foods,” adds MacDonald. “Our markets are really changing the way many Lower Mainlanders enjoy their food.”  

Through the Markets and our special events, the Society spreads awareness of agricultural issues facing our largely urban society. These issues range from the truths about genetically modified foods, to fair pricing for agricultural products, to the glory of a variety of foods available with a locally networked food system.

They also sponsor key community events, such as the three-part series on The Future of Farming in BC.
