Food Bank Donations
Throughout the year, when donating to the food bank, I often hear that people want to split their donation into 2 categories: items of need and items of want. So, at our 2009 Sustenance Festival, we asked the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition for suggestions when purchasing “needed items”: Food Bank Food Choices and we asked the public, “If you were in line at the Food Bank, what would you want?” and we received a list of answers (we’ve deleted items from the list that the Food Bank doesn’t accept such as homemade cookies, perishable items, etc.) Ifyouwereinline?”

New City Market
New City Market’s business plan is now online for review & comments. In fact, they are holding a series of public events to gather more input. The New City Market (NCM) concept in Vancouver, BC has been developed over an 18-month period by the Local Food First steering group. Its primary purpose is to fill a major gap in the local food system that is not being satisfied by the food industry. This industry is driven predominantly by large box wholesalers, distributors and retailers. Through workshops, interviews and research with various stakeholders in the local food movement such as farmers, restaurateurs, retailers, eateries, distributors, food advocates and local government, the Local Food First group determined that there was a need for the following services and facilities at NCM: “Year-round weekly indoor farmers’ and chefs’ markets; as well as a commercial kitchen, storage and local farm-product distribution support.”
